Who we are
American Student Assistance® (ASA) is a non-profit, federally funded student loan guarantor that was founded in 1956. Guarantors traditionally assist the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to insure private lenders against the risk of default on college loans. But ASA champions a new role for the nation’s guarantors, one that better meets the needs of today’s students and families.
At ASA, we help borrowers manage their higher education debt by providing counseling and education throughout their entire loan experience. Today, more than 60% of all federal financial aid is in the form of loans. We believe that students and families should be given the tools they need to manage that debt throughout their entire repayment period. In our eyes, the student loan borrower is a “consumer”—and our consumers deserve access to superior debt management services.
ASA’s “Wellness” programs deliver debt management information to borrowers at critical points along the life of their loan in order to prevent repayment problems before they start. We help students and parents turn their college loans into a valuable steppingstone to a better future and a healthy credit record. Everyone wins with the Wellness approach: students build stronger financial futures; colleges graduate financially savvy alumni; and our communities reap the benefits of greater access to higher education—including lower unemployment rates, higher tax revenues and a better quality of life overall.
