ASA Symposium: Building Futures, Measuring Success

One of my favorite things about June is the ASA Symposium, taking place this year on June 16 – 17. It’s a truly exciting chance to catch up with old friends, match up with new ones, and have meaningful discussions with people who care about students’ loans and success as much as you do!

This year’s Symposium topic is Building Futures, Measuring Success. It starts off with what should be a very inspirational keynote speech from Dr. Zenobia L. Hikes, Vice President of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech, on Leadership for the Hip Hop Generation.

Then, through a series of speakers with a wide range of experiences, we tackle the question of how we can bring about change for our students. How can we ensure that higher education encompasses a wider swath of the American population, across racial and socioeconomic barriers? How can we make the finite resources we’re allotted to serve these students go farther on campus by being more efficient and effective each day?

Every year, when I leave on the last day of the Symposium, my head is always buzzing with ideas and echoing with great conversations I’ve had. I love finding out how my colleagues at schools across the country are tackling the challenges they face, especially when I’m sitting in on the feisty roundtable sessions.

And I’m particularly eager to tackle this year’s focus—how do we determine the meaning of success, and how do we measure it?

You don’t have to wait until the Symposium to give me your opinion on that topic. But do consider joining us to discuss the issue in person. Not only is the ASA Symposium a terrific opportunity to learn and network, but with the swan boats out in the Public Gardens, Boston is just lovely this time of year!
