School Closed

I was enrolled in a MA program in California when the program was terminated because of internal problems. Now I get a notice about student loans for thousands of dollars. If I had benefited okay, or if it was my fault BUT I GOT NOTHING while these people got paid.

Dear Mindy,

If your school closes prior to you receiving your degree and you are unable to transfer the credits, you may be eligible to have your student loans discharged. Your 1st step is to contact your loan holder and request a Closed School Discharge form, which you will need to fill out and send back to the holder.

Once you request the form, the loan holder will put a type of hold on your account for 60 days to give you time to get the paperwork back and for the claim to be reviewed. I suggest you return the completed paperwork quickly so as not to be billed before the review is complete. You may also be able to download this form from your loan holder’s website. If the discharge is approved, any payments you’ve made to date will be refunded to you once the claim is resolved.

Hope that helps,
Betsy
