Parents’ Information

Dear Betsy,

I am filling out my FAFSA but my parents are no longer involved in paying for any part of my education. Can I leave the questions about their tax information blank?

Thank You,
Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,

If you are considered an independent student, as defined under the Higher Education Act, then your parents’ information is not considered when determining your eligibility for federal financial aid. To be considered an independent, you must meet at least 1 of the following conditions:

  • you are at least 24 years old
  • an orphan
  • a veteran of the military
  • a graduate student
  • married
  • or have dependants of your own

If you do not meet any of these conditions then you must include your parents’ information on the FAFSA, regardless of whether they plan to contribute to your education.

Regards,
Betsy
