Financial Aid for Living Expenses

Dear Betsy,

I live at home and I work, but I can’t make ends meet. I have started school, so I am unable to work many hours. Is there any way I can get financial aid for my living expenses?

Sincerely,
Joe

Dear Joe

When you apply for financial aid, your school will calculate your cost of attendance. This includes tuition, fees, and some cost of living expenses. You can get financial aid—including scholarships, grants, and student loans—up to the cost of attendance. Keep a good eye on the student loans you take out so you don't end up in a situation where your payments are greater than you can afford after you leave school.

You can start the financial aid process by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov) and discussing your options with your school’s financial aid office.

Please let me know if you have other questions.

Regards,
Betsy
