What Is NSLDS?

The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) is the U.S. Department of Education’s central database for federal student aid records. It receives data from schools, agencies such as American Student Assistance® (ASA) that guarantee student loans, the Direct Loan Program, and other U.S. Department of Education programs. NSLDS provides an integrated view of your federal education loans, tracking them from the time you apply until you complete repayment.

NSLDS allows you to see the facts on all of your student loans (except private loans) at the same time—including loan type (subsidized Stafford, unsubsidized Direct Stafford, etc.), the original loan amount, the date it was issued, the amount disbursed, the loan holder or servicer, and how much money you currently owe.

Managing Your Debt

One of the most important aspects of student loan borrowing is learning to manage your debt. As a borrower, it is your responsibility to keep track of your loans and to make on-time payments. If you need information on your student loans but aren’t sure who to contact, NSLDS is an excellent place to start.

If you’re currently enrolled in school and aren’t sure of how much debt you’ve incurred, you can use NSLDS to start keeping track. If you’ve already graduated and need help figuring out who holds your student loans, you can also find this information at NSLDS.

How Can You Access Your Personal Information?

The NSLDS Student Access website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To access your personal data, go to www.nslds.ed.gov and click the “Financial Aid Review” button. You will be taken to a page that asks for your Social Security number, the first 2 letters of your last name, your date of birth, and your PIN (the same number you used when filling out your FAFSA through the Department of Education—if you lost your PIN, please visit the Federal Student Aid PIN website at www.pin.ed.gov and select “Request a Duplicate PIN” from the left-hand navigation list).

Once you log on to the system, you will see a chart with your loan information listed, including the total amount of all outstanding principal and all outstanding interest on your loan(s). If you are currently enrolled in school, you will also see your enrollment status (full time, half time, etc.) listed in the top right-hand corner of the page.

How Current Is This Information?

New loans are reported to NSLDS within 30 days of funds being received. If you have been making payments on a loan, the outstanding principal balance listed by NSLDS may be as much as 120 days old. Contact your loan servicer (the agency you will or currently make payments to) for more up-to-date balance information.
